I get a possibly perverse kick out of organizing my email.
When it comes to organizing stuff, I really have a knack for it, IF it’s done on my computer. My room may be a different story, but when it comes to my computer, to emails, to my online files on Google Docs, I always make it a point to organize.
A friend once asked me, when I got my iPod Nano 3G from Chikka.com, whether I had spent hours trying to organize the thing. I didn’t. It was pointless, because I liked shuffling my music anyway.
But when it comes to email and work documents, I really make it a point to ORGANIZE. Why? Because it’s essential.
There are differences when you organize Yahoo Mail and Gmail, however. On Yahoo, you get to dunk things into folders. On Gmail, they have nifty things called labels. Labels function much like a Venn Diagram of sorts. You can allow two labels to overlap each other, so you can organize your email into two or more different fields. Neat, huh?
On the other hand, Yahoo’s folders are restricted to one topic or title you give the folder. The only thing I like with it is that when you need to move your inbox emails from inbox to folder, you could do it in one step, or you could even drag emails to the folders when you use the New Yahoo Mail.
On the other hand, Gmail is a little clunky when you move emails. You need to label it first, then you have to archive it. Grr. That’s why it would really be great if you had filters to toss your emails directly into labels and archive them on Gmail, or have filters to toss your Yahoo mails directly into your neat little Yahoo folders. The only downside to Yahoo folders is that they actually have a limit. Only fifteen filters for us, non Yahoo Mail Plus memberz! Man, too bad.
Next week on Productive Mondays, how to clean up your emails step by step, from clearing your inbox, to automating the inbox cleanup, both on Gmail and Yahoomail.
For Tuesday Ramblez, I’m going to talk to you about moi getting a FREE iPod Nano!
